SOME of Majorca's largest hotel chains are forecasting a drop of 20 percent in bookings for the forthcoming summer season.
President of the Associacion de Cadenas Hoteleras (ACH) Aurelio Vazquez said 2009 would be “difficult and complex.” Vazquez claimed the market, especially in Britain, was “volatile,” and there was little chance of change.
However, he claimed the market for all-inclusive deals was showing an increase.
The ACH chief said that hotel chains were actively working with international tour operators to stimulate demand and encourage early bookings and discounts of between 10 and 15 percent had been offered.

Cuts in flight frequency by airlines and changes to timetables had also badly affected bookings, especially during the early part of the year, he added.

However, he said many hoteliers would have a clearer indication of their prospects for the summer after Easter, which this year is from April 9-12. They would then be able to gauge the results of a major promotional campaign featuring world tennis number one Rafa Nadal, he said.
