Palma.The accident happened in Establiments, on the outskirts of Palma, where repair work was being carried out on the road surface. The accident happened at 12.30 when the 37-year-old victim was run over by a road surfacing machine.
The machine was reversing at the time and caused multiple and serious injuries to the victim who died moments later.
The emergency services were contacted immediately but there was nothing paramedics could have done to have saved his life once they reached the scene.
The victim was eventually identified as Cecilio Navarro Garcia.
A full investigation into the tragic accident has been opened but it will be handled by the National Police, as opposed to the Guardia Civil, because it was a work accident as opposed to a traffic incident.
One of the victim's fellow work colleagues said that once the vehicle had been put in reverse, there was apparently no way of avoiding Garcia.
Members of the National Police questioned a number of work colleagues at the scene and eyewitnesses and are expected to return to the scene of the accident today as they try and establish what happened and why.
The driver of the vehicle and Garcia's work mates were said to have been devastated by what happened.
The Local Police have cordoned off the area until the body was removed.
