Palma.—There was pandemonium yesterday morning when leading Spanish businessman Jose Maria Ruiz-Mateos turned up for a court hearing on the Avenidas.
He and his family stand accused by the Rado family of having defrauded them of various millions in the sale of a hotel in Paguera.

Two million euros
Ruiz-Mateos is also caught up in the allegedly fraudulent sale of another hotel in Calas de Mallorca, and bail has been posted at two million euros for that case.

After having refused to attend previous court hearings, Ruiz-Mateos had little choice but to present himself in court yesterday in order to avoid being arrested.

On January 12, a judge ruled that none of his six sons could leave the country and yesterday, a travel ban was slapped on Ruiz-Mateos himself. He, along with his sons, will have to present himself to his local police station or the court house every 15 days.

In court yesterday he executed his constitutional right not to make a statement and on leaving court, he told the awaiting press pack that he does not believe in the justice system because “it' s an embarrassment.” Before returning to Madrid he also told the press that he has no regrets about what he did and would do it all again. “I work for everybody else, the working class” he said.
