Palma.—A special National Police unit has arrested five people and dismantled a very active gang which apparently specialised in smuggling Eastern European women in to Majorca where they were then forced to work as prostitutes.

According to the police, the women left their countries of origin having been promised new lives and good jobs in the West, but this never actually transpired.

Once here, the victims were forced to work as prostitutes in order to gradually pay their smugglers back for getting them into the West.
Police sources said that five people arrested yesterday may well be part of a gang operating across the country and various forces are cooperating in a nationwide operation which will lead to further arrests over the coming days. And, according to the police, not only were the women forced to work as prostitutes, they were also apparently threatened with extreme violence should they fail to perform their duties.

Police sources said that the women were literally terrified of their so called bosses, so much so, none of them went to the police.
At going to press last night the operation was still on going.
A number of properties were being searched and a number of top of the range luxury vehicles had been confiscated during the day.
Police sources confirmed that units were carrying out further searches and investigations across the island, as well as across the country.
