THE president of the Majorcan Chamber of Commerce, Joan Gual de Torrella, said yesterday that “less people will come to the island” in search of work if the number of jobs available declines on the back of the downturn in activity in the construction industry.

Gual said yesterday that immigration is going to be hit by job losses in the building trade. “Some may find alternative work in the tourism or service sectors while others will have to be looked after by the state,” he said.
Gual added that if the slowdown in the construction industry continues and the job market stagnates, then it may stem illegal immigration.
