By Humphrey Carter A waiter was yesterday sentenced to 23 years in prison for a brutal sex attack on a British barmaid and model in Magalluf in May 2008. Palma.—Judges jailed Moroccan Mohamed Fadel el Anssari, 31, for twelve years for the attempted murder, who was aged 21 at the time, and eleven years for raping her after finding him guilty of both crimes.

State prosecutors had demanded a 23-year prison sentence at the end of his three-day trial in Palma last month.
Maddison, from Houghton, County Durham, was attacked at around 4am as she returned home to her rented flat after working a shift in a bar.
She was raped, stabbed repeatedly in the neck, throat and back and left for dead.
But, once she was convinced she was alone, she managed to drag herself to a local restaurant on the corner of the block of apartments in which she was living and raised the alarm.

She spent two weeks in hospital and doctors said she was lucky to survive.
Fadel was arrested in July 2011 following a lengthy undercover police investigation. Detectives recovered a cigarette he discarded in the street and found his DNA matched that found at the scene of the crime.

During the court hearing she turned down an offer of compensation on the grounds that she wanted her attacker to serve the maximum sentence and, if possible, be deported home to Morocco.

Maddison, who has waived her right to anonymity, broke down in tears after being told the news at her home yesterday. “I'm over the moon. I had convinced myself he was going to get off which was terrifying. “All I ever wanted was for him to go to prison for a very long time,” she said.
On Facebook she described the four-and-a-half years since the attack as “tough'.” Her attacker's defence was based on the fact that he was a recovering cocaine addict at the time and often could not control his actions, according to a doctor who diagnosed him in Morocco, but Fadel was ashamed to admit his condition to his family.

Last night Maddison was looking forward to finally trying to put her ordeal behind her, Fadel has spent his first night of a long stretch in jail behind bars in Palma.
