THE Ministry of Agriculture is to provide direct compensation to farmers and crop growers who were badly affected by the cyclonic winds which struck Majorca on the 24th and 25th of last month.
Funds will mainly go to growers who were cultivating fruit and vegetables in greenhouses, either glass or plastic as these structures suffered the most serious damage from the adverse weather conditions. Those opting for greenhouse production are not covered by agrarian insurance schemes.
According to the Farmers' Union, losses for those growing under glass were set back by some 700'000 euros - and those with fruit and vegetables under plastic covering - by 900'000 euros.
