WORK has begun on a large tourist accommodation and commercial centre in Magalluf. Earth works are in evidence on the plot of 11'000 square metres which is sandwiched between Pedro Vaquer Ramis avenue and Cas Saboner in the centre of the town. The multi-storey development comprising basement, ground and first floor, will provide accommodation for 266, and facilities for a wide range of businesses. The chief constructors are Procetursa SL and a joint venture partner, Laconsan SL. The go-ahead for the scheme was granted by Calvia Council last July just after the ruling Partido Popular was returned to power following the regional elections. Criticism of the development from local traders has been rife. They claim that the “shopping mall” trend will centralise clients under one roof and sound the death knell for small businesses.
