STAFF REPORTER THE regional Ministry for Social Affairs is allocating 1.6 million euros for the construction of facilities for the elderly in Petra, Esporles and Valldemossa.

Some of the centres will be for day-time use only whilst others will provide overnight accommodation as well. The project will provide 44 places principally for those people who are unable to look after themselves.

Minister Fina Santiago explained yesterday that the centres will be ready by the end of the year, and once complete will be handed over to the respective local town councils for administration.

The project is a pioneering one in the Balearics in the sense that the centres for overnight stay are not permanent residences but rather to provide relief for families who normally look after their elderly relatives but for a variety of reasons such as business trips or holidays have to leave their homes and spend a limited time away. The centres will make sure the elderly are well cared for in the meantime.
