STAFF REPORTER AN apparently illegal private ten-hole golf course in Pollensa has finally been bulldozed to make way for horse grazing. The illegal course was built a decade ago by the British owner of the Can Guillo estate on the Pollensa to Lluc road. The course was brought to the local council's attention by neighbours during the drought of 1999 who were suspicious about the amount of water being used to irrigate the estate.

The property was inspected and a number of wells closed, but it was not until 2002 that the course, allegedly camouflaged by groves of carefully planted fruit trees, began to take shape and the authorities took action. But, a battle ensued and in 2003, the owner applied for permission to convert the property into a rural hotel. The licenses and permits were gradually granted but the PSM Majorcan Nationalist Party deeply opposed the golf course, slowing the process down. Now, two years on, the property has been sold to a Russian who is clearing the course to make way for his horses.
