PEOPLE living in the coastal town of Porto Cristo in the municipality of Manacor have long been calling for a multi-purpose hall for social and cultural activities. Their prayers were finally answered last Thursday when community president Joan Gomila declared facilities within the health centre in Calle Muntaner open for business.

Residents are delighted that they now have a hall they can call their own for holding exhibitions, meetings, functions, and even small-scale theatre. As a provisional measure, the cultural centre will be run by Sa Xerxa, a non-profit making group in Porto Cristo. It will take responsibility until the local council dictates otherwise, for a programme of art, theatre and education. Catalan actress Rosa Gamis has already set the scene for quality entertainment in the hall by appearing in a stage version of George Bernard Shaw's work, Pigmalion. Taking advantage of the new facilities, an art exhibition has been set up displaying the work of Catalina Julve from Manacor and a wide range of activities has been planned for the coming months.
