PALMA
MAJORCAN hoteliers were supremely confident yesterday that all of the 970 businesses belonging to the Island's Hotel Federation would open from 1st April this year to coincide with Easter week.

Federation President, Antonio Horrach said that his members were not expecting any decline in the number of bookings registered last year at a time when staffing levels were kept “at a minimum.” Horrach gave assurances that there will be no further job cuts this year in the hotels embraced by the federation.

The President said that currently only 15 percent of Majorca's hotels were open - some 140 to 150 establishments - containing 37'500 beds. When the rest of the industry opens in April, confirmed Horrach, there will be 250'000 tourist places available on Majorca.

He explained that almost a third of the hotels which are now open comprise 39 establishments in the city area of Palma, whilst a fifth of the Playa del Arenal's 130 hotels are also functioning.

Horrach said that Arenal is one of the resorts which is enjoying good business in low season thanks to the recovery of the German economy. It is German tourists who make up the highest number of foreign guests at Arenal hotels.
