Palma.—In the early hours of yesterday morning a 32-year-old driver was involved in a serious accident along the Paseo Maritimo which could have ended in tragedy if anyone had been close to the scene at the time the driver lost control.

The young man, who later failed two alcohol tests, according to the police and was subsequently arrested by the Guardia Civil, first collided with a parked car causing considerable damage and piling it into a sign post, before bouncing off and smashing into large yellow glass recycling container.

That is where the driver came to a halt at 5.40am with debris strewn across the road and Port police having to direct the traffic carefully through the accident scene until it was cleared.

The driver failed a breath test at the scene and a second at the San Fernando police station .
He was then taken to the cells at the Via Alemania court house where he remained yesterday.
