THE Council of Majorca has set up an interdepartmental working committee to compile an application to UNESCO for the Tramuntana mountains to be listed as a “world heritage” site.

A separate application is also being made to have the traditional song of the Sibila, an originally Ethiopian prophecy about the coming of Christ, sung every Christmas Eve in churches around Majorca listed as a world heritage item. The President of the Council of Majorca, Francina Armengol said yesterday that the Council has been working since 2008 towards presenting an application to UNESCO and now the moment has arrived for more “coordinated” action. Culture, tourism, heritage and environmental departments will be working in tandem to secure the prestigious listing. If secured, the “world heritage” title would be used to boost environmental tourism.
