The Balearic government announced yesterday that within the next two years it intends to have reduced its fleet of official vehicles by half.
AT the moment, the vehicle fleet comprises 708 vehicles, but come 2015, the government wants to see that reduced to 361.
According to government sources, halving the fleet will save the local authority at least 700'000 euros.
Apparently, the previous Socialist-led coalition government bought 165 new vehicles at a cost of 2.5 million euros.
The government stressed yesterday that the slimming down of the vehicle fleet will in no way affect essential vehicle such as emergency vehicles or those used by the forestry commission, for example.
