THE Balearic Institute for Tourism (Ibatur) is planning an international marketing campaign, launching Palma as the “Fifth Island” of the region with a full programme of shopping trips, cultural activities and business tourism.

The pending plan will establish the Balearic capital as a selling point side by side with the four Islands of Majorca, Minorca, Ibiza and Formentera. Regional minister for Tourism, Francesc Buils, said yesterday that Palma is to be treated as “a special case” with potential overseas visits for Trade Fairs and Conferences now being promoted through the new Palau de Congressos (Congress Hall) which is under construction at the eastern end of the Paseo Marítimo next to the Gesa building. In tandem with this new development is the reconstruction of Palma's Muelle Viejo (old wharf) which is to be converted into a leisure area.
