THE police and Guardia Civil are seeking the vandal or vandals who over the weekend caused considerable material damage to dozens of cars in Marratxi, Palma and Son Servera. The problems started in Marratxi last week, although the full extent of the damage has only just started to come to light. The front and rear windows were smashed for no apparent reason. Nothing was stolen. Then, in the early hours of Sunday morning, the back windows of at least ten cars parked in Calles Bisbe Massanet, Maria Canals and Sant Llatzer in Palma were broken. It is believed that an iron bar or similar was used to break the windows and nothing was stolen from the cars.
In Son Servera, however, not only were the rear windows broken, but telephones, money and other items were stolen from a dozen or so cars.
The police are treating the Son Servera incidents as the work of a gang and arrests are expected shortly.
But as nothing was taken from the cars in Marratxi and Palma, it is believed to be the work of a different group.
An investigation has been opened, and it is believed that more damaged cars may be reported over the next few days.
Insurance companies have started to receive demands for compensation.
The damaged cars include Opel Corsas and Astras, and Ford Orians and Escorts.
