SOME of the key German tour operators, including Thomas Cook, Rewe and Alltours, have given assurances to Majorcan hoteliers that at the moment they are keeping their block bookings of aircraft seats in anticipation of business levels during the coming tourist season.
Antoni Horrach, president of the Hotel Federation of Majorca said yesterday after a meeting with the tour operators that the Germans had speculated that if British holiday-makers fail to come to the Island in their customary numbers, there will be a running price battle between Spain and Italy to capture a further share of the German market. The tour operators urged the hoteliers to lower their prices now in order to stimulate demand and not wait until the season is upon them before offering aggressive discount prices.
