Staff Reporter THE Calvia council has approved plans for a multiplex and leisure centre in the popular resort of Magalluf. Provisional approval has been given to plans to develop the new leisure site between Avenidas de l'Olivera and Pedro Vaquer Ramis. The promoters plan to build a new street and a building for a multiscreen cinema, leisure centre and 20 shops. The area is just under 50'000 square metres. Under the PGOU (the development plan for Calvia), an area of 25'000 square metres will be for commercial use and services. Part of the land, just over 19'000 square metres, has been excluded from the plans approved by the council and will be reserved for tourist use, possibly for a hotel with a maximum of 266 beds. According to Deputy Mayor Alberto Leon, the promotors will build a cinema with five or six screens opposite the Magalluf sports pavilion, as well as a museum with attractions and a games area with a bowling alley and mini-golf course, among other faciltiies. The shops will be in the part closest to the Avenida Pedro Vaquer Ramis. Leon said that the projects could start “in the short term, this year,” as they have already been posted for public inspection and no objections have been lodged. He pointed out that there are no cinemas in the Calvia area, and this type of leisure activity would help boost tourism in Magalluf in the winter.
