STAFF REPORTER SOLLER will be holding its tenth annual Young Musicians' Competition on 18th and 19th April this year and is open to anyone under twenty years of age on the day the competition is held.

Three categories will encompass candidates aged between 8 and 11, between 12 and 15 and between 16 and 20. Participants can choose any instrument to perform on including the voice. In this year's edition of the competition, those who choose to play the viola can enter for the “Miquel Ballester” prize. Other categories include the Mike Watts composition prize, and the Barbara Walus “Les meves terres” (“My Homeland”) award.

Participants who win prizes cannot enter the contest for another three years or until they are categorised within another age group. Those entering the competition will have to prepare three pieces of about 10 minutes in length. The performances will be accompanied by a pianist if the work requires it.

The competition is taking place on 18th and 19th April in Soller in the Capella de les Escolapies in Carrer Batach; it will have two stages:
On 18th April at 10am the first phase of elimination will begin in which the competitor will interpret one of the pieces chosen freely by him or her. The jury can interrupt the audition and choose one part or movement of the piece which has been selected. The entrants will audition according to the categories they are in and according to alphabetic order.

On 19th April, at 10.30am the final phase will begin in which the short-listed competitors will perform the two remaining pieces chosen by the jury and in the order chosen by the jury.
