Palma.—French supermarket giant Carrefour is pushing ahead with plans to build a giant shopping mall next to its Coll den Rebassa supermarket which could create up to 3'500 jobs.

Carrefour said yesterday that the mall would open in 2014 and would attract 12 million people a year.
The 65'000 square metre project would have restaurants, designer shops and even a cinema.
The supermarket giant has said that the project should give the local economy a lift and at the same time give tourists and residents alike a new shopping experience.

Major international retailers have been busy expanding into the Balearics over recent years building out-of-town shopping areas mostly in Palma and also in Marratxi.
