THE Minister for Transport and the Environment, Gabriel Vicens was one of a group of local mayors and dignitaries yesterday on the first trial run of the electric train from Palma to Inca.

This is the first stretch of Majorcan railway to have been fully electrified but will not come into full operation until the end of the summer.
Vicens said that yesterday's trial run was no election stunt. “We're in no rush to complete the project. We will begin electrifying the rest of the island's rail network after the summer and the job should be completed by early 2012,” he said.

Nevertheless, he said that yesterday was an important day for Majorca's rail network and marked a new beginning for the island's public transport network which will eventually include the Palma tram running to the airport and beyond.
