STAFF REPORTER THE regional ministry for Agriculture and Fisheries has paid out 1.4 million euros to a total of 237 farmers and fishermen in the Balearics, largely to compensate them for the effects that bad weather has had on their industry.

The Agrarian and Fishing Guarantee Fund (FOGAIBA), a ministry watchdog, made the payments last week, sourcing eleven different lines of government subsidy.

A major part of the payments (678'865 euros to 55 claimants) were made to potato farmers who because of bad weather couldn't sow their winter crops; and to greenhouse crop growers and fruit tree farmers (122'355 euros for 37 claimants).
