PALMA SPOKESMAN for Majorca's left-wing “Bloc” coalition, Biel Barcelo, yesterday urged Balearic President Francesc Antich to back the railway projects proposed by his government or risk having the construction schedule put back beyond the programme completion date of 2011.

Barcelo said that the railway builders will be “working against the clock” because “a lot of time is needed to make sure all the proper bylaws have been adhered to prior to construction starting.” His comments came after a Parliamentary session yesterday when Opposition Partido Popular (PP) leader, Rosa Estaras had questioned Antich on the much-debated issue of the proposed northern train route to Alcudia from Sa Pobla, and the tram-style train which is planned to run through the streets of Manacor on its way to Arta. Both projects have met with considerable public opposition.
