PALMA
THE latest date for when the metro in Palma will be up and running is the start of the school term in September.
The Director General of Transport, Antoni Verger, hopes that the ill-fated underground system will be open at some time during the summer and says that the work to repair the metro is already “well advanced”.

Verger warned, however, that “there are things that are not totally in our control”. Once the line can be used again, tests will begin and the engineer drivers will have to go through training.

Verger refused to give a figure for the cost of the repair work on the metro, which closed last October following the storms.
He did however reveal that an audit would be carried out to discover who was responsible for the deficiencies in construction that led to the flooding of the metro during the heavy rains.

He said he was confident that those who were responsible would be held to account and said that every step would be taken to make sure that citizens would not bear the costs of the repair work.
