A 61-year old woman, Carmen Rufian Ramirez was killed yesterday in a tragic road accident in Sant Joan, Emergency services reported.
The collision took place at the 3.350 kilometre mark on the MA-3220 which links Montüiri with Sant Joan.
Guardia Civil sources said that around 12.40pm, for reasons which are as yet unclear, a Citroen Xsara driven by 51-year-old Antonio P.D.C., and a Ford Focus driven by 69-year-old Damian V.S. were involved in a head-on collision.

As a direct result of the accident, the front seat passenger in the Ford Focus died instantly.
Within moments of the accident, ambulances, the Traffic department of the Guardia Civil and the Majorcan Fire Service rushed to the scene.
The 61-year-old woman had to be cut out of the wreckage with special equipment. Similarly, firemen had to rescue one of the drivers by cutting his seat away from the main body of the vehicle.

Both in a critical condition, Antonio and Damian were ferried to two different hospitals in Palma.
Although the causes of the accident are still being investigated, a first hypothesis is that one of the vehicles was turning onto the main road from the access lane to a country property.

Due to the impact of the accident, wreckage had spread over a wide area and there were some delays to traffic running in both directions on the main road. Guardia Civil Traffic officers were finally able to get vehicles moving again.
