RECYCLING society Ecoembes confirmed yesterday that 90 percent of people in the Balearic Islands have a system in place to selectively dispose of their waste - mainly divided into plastic containers, tins and cartons.

Basing their research on figures for 2008, Ecoembes said that the results indicate that 14 percent more of the population were committed to eco-friendly disposal than there were in 2007. According to interviews carried out amongst the general public in the Islands, 70 percent said they were selectively disposing of waste for environmental reasons; 26 percent said they wanted to make it easier for recycling of waste material after it had been disposed of by individual households; and 21 percent saw it as a civic duty. Separately, 8 out of 10 claimed they put waste paper and cardboard in the blue public rubbish skips.
