GUARDIA Civil officers were forced to fire at the tyres of a car, to stop a suicide driver who was speeding down Cuesta de Xorrigo (Manacor road) in the wrong direction, endangering other drivers. The driver had managed to avoid pursuit for four kilometres, but was eventually hemmed in by patrol cars. Despite this, he made a final effort to escape, crashing into one of the patrol cars and driving off again. It was at this point that a Guardia Civil officer, in view of the danger, fired two shots which hit the tyres. The driver attempted to escape on foot but was caught and arrested.
The suspect was allegedly under the influence of drugs and is believed to have stolen the car in Manacor. He has a long record, according to police sources.
