THE first of two celebrity charity events starts in Majorca today when the 25th anniversary Robert Winsor Charity Golf tournament tees off at the Real Golf de Bendinat. Nearly 20 top British celebrities are taking part in the three-day event which started last night with the welcome dinner and team draw.
Winsor's target is to beat last year's record of 110.000 euros for local disabled children. The first of two celebrity golf rounds starts this morning with a Texas Scramble teeing off at 9.30. The main event takes place tomorrow with the gala prize giving ceremony, cabaret and raffle being held tomorrow night at the Santa Ponsa Country Club.
This year companies from Majorca to South Africa have donated superb items for the raffle and Key West in Portals has vowed to add five percent of what ever the final figure raised is. Winsor's 25th anniversary event has attracted the full backing of Ibatur, Palma's city council and the Ministry for Social Services as well as top British celebrities including Jasper Carrott, John Lodge, Alan Ball MBE, Brian Close CBE, Mike England MBE and Norman Hunter. Many of the celebrities are returning to help Winsor's fund raising efforts because of the great fun they have and the great causes the funds go to.
And, no sooner do Winsor's celebrity guests start leaving Majorca, a new set start arriving - again from the UK. This Saturday night, Pirates Adventure in Magalluf is holding its annual charity premiere and gala dinner in aid of Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital in London. Alex Best, Daniella Westbrook, L. Lewellyn-Bowen, Jack Ryder, Kim Marsh, Clare Sweeney are just some of the top celebrities coming to Majorca for this weekend's event which, it is hoped, will raise over 50'000 euros. The charity raffle includes some rare items such as a signed pair of Wayne Rooney's football boots and a poster for The Aviator signed by Leonardo DiCaprio. Six child patients treated at Great Ormond Street and their families have been flown down specially for the week courtesy of sponsors Thomson Holidays and First Choice.
