STAFF REPORTER WITH the ash cloud caused by the Icelandic volcano moving eastwards at lower altitudes, closing airports in the Mediterranean area - from the mainland of Spain as far as the Balearics - has not been discounted, the European air traffic control (Eurocontrol) said yesterday.

The Spanish National Airports Authority (AENA) reported that up until 2pm yesterday, 30 flights either taking off or landing in Balearic airports had had to be cancelled as a direct result of volcanic activity.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in Spain yesterday, all airports remained open.
