THE British Consul, Mr Paul Abrey, paid an official visit to Balearic leader Jaume Matas yesterday, to invite him to the official celebration of the Queen's 80th birthday. The celebration will take place at Bellver Castle on June 10 and will be attended by the British Ambassador, Sir Stephen Wright.
Some 350 people, including the leading local authorities and British residents, are expected to attend the celebration, during which music will be provided by Centre Stage Productions. This is the first time that there has been an official celebration of the Queen's birthday in many years, and it has rapidly become one of the most eagerly-awaited dates on the calendar. Mr Abrey was accompanied during his visit to the Balearic leader by the vice Consul, Sebastián Mas.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting with Matas, the Consul predicted a good summer from the tourist point of view, with five to six per cent more British visitors than last year. An estimated two million British tourists are expected to holiday in Majorca this summer.
