Newsdesk THE Balearic Minister of the Interior, Jose Maria Rodriguez, yesterday delivered 108 new protection suits (worth 162'000 euros) for fighting forest fires to the 27 voluntary groups of the Majorcan Civil Protection. This initiative will be extended to the rest of the islands in the next few weeks. Each voluntary group has four suits, made up of a fire resistant sweater with a yellow reflective band, green reflective trousers, a yellow helmet, leather cut-resistant gloves and forest boots, all approved by the European Union for fighting forest fires. Rodriguez highlighted the quality of the materials out of which the suits are made, which means they cost a lot (1'500 euros per suit). He said this represented “a large finanacial outlay” for his Ministry. During the next few weeks more of these suits will be delivered to voluntary groups of the Civil Protection in Minorca and Ibiza. This act is part of the measures adopted by the Balearic Government to fight forest fires, and also part of the special programme for revitalising the Civil Protection voluntary groups which the Ministry of the Interior is developing. This plan encompasses the development of an intense programme of training in all the aspects of prevention and action in situations of crisis and emergencies by volunteers.
