STAFF REPORTER THE Federation of Balearic Retailers, Afedeco, is calling for a continued police presence in Palma to prohibit illegal street vendors in key shopping areas such as Calle San Miguel, Jaime II and Plaza Mayor.

It is deplorable said one source from Afedeco yesterday, that the practice is on the increase right in front of the shop windows of legal, tax paying retailers.

The federation says that local authorities are doing little to protect registered shopkeepers from what the source described as “impromptu vendors peddling wares which certainly would not have passed any health and safety or quality inspections.” Retailers say the vendors are tipped off in advance about any imminent police presence but warned that if not enough is done to protect their interests, that Afedeco will launch its own campaign to stop the illegal competition.
