PALMA council's department of Traffic and Transport has finalised the project to install sunshades in the waiting area for the horsedrawn carriages in Arenal, situated in the Camino de las Maravillas beside the beach. These will be put in place shortly, according to the department.
Representatives of the Balearic Platform for the Defence of Animals (BALDEA) had protested yesterday morning in Arenal waving placards saying “Sunshades for the horses now!”. This demonstration had been timed to coincide with the annual veterinary inspection of the horses. The council explained that, in a meeting with the Association for the Defence of Animal Rights (ADDA), its President Maria Whitman de Sanso had given the department a petition for the placing of sunshades to protect the animals which pull the carriages from the sun. Palma council told her that they were already working on this project, which has now been finalised. The council promised that they would be installed in the Arenal area before summer. Many animal protection associations have been fighting for more than 10 years to make working conditions better for these animals.
The horses work practically all day in the summer sun and need at least some shade when they are in the waiting area, said a spokesperson.
