FROM June onwards the sewage plant in Pollensa will be able to treat 100 percent of the waste that arrives at the plant and this will effectively mean that there will be no more sewage leaks into the Bay of Pollensa

That is the good news.

The bad news is that until work on overhauling the sewage treatment plant is complete early next month, a substantial amount of waste will flow into the Bay. “The next ten days will be critical and unfortunately there will be leaks into the sea,” the area manager of Ibasan (the Balearic Sewage Company), Barbara Mestre, said. Presently, the sewage treatment plant is being overhauled at a cost of 1.1 million euros. The second phase involves extending the plant which will go-ahead as planned and hopefully be completed for 2007, confirmed, Mestre. She praised residents in the Port of Pollensa, for their “patience.” This situation, she said, is “difficult and inherited” and “we are trying to solve it”. Puerto Pollensa residents have contacted the Bulletin over the last fdew weeks to complain about the sewage leaks and the smell.
