SPAIN´S government will impose a tax on high earners in the next few weeks, Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said yesterday. “I've said we will ask for a greater effort from the higher earning citizens in our country ... in the next few weeks,“ Zapatero said during a parliamentary session. He declined to give more details.

Last week reports suggested the government would introduce a tax on people with a net worth of 1 million euros ($1.23 million). The move would be in addition to a 15 billion euro austerity package aimed at cutting Spain's budget deficit.
