THE international award-winning Canadian jazz pianist Diana Krall will be headlining this year's Noches Mediterraneas Festival of music in Majorca.
Now in its ninth year, the festival will open on June 14 with a concert by the world famous Belgian composer and singer of ballads Adamo at Costa Nord in Valldemossa.
The festival was presented yesterday by the Director of Ibatur, Sussana Sciacovelli, the Director of the Balearic Institute for Tourism Planning, Antoni Oliver and the President of the Foundation for Sustainable Tourism, Jordi Cabrer at the Ministry for Tourism.
The Jazz Voyeur festival is also involved in the event which the organisers hope will be closed by Morente Morente in October.
However, in the meantime, the main attraction is going to be Diana Krall live at the Palma Arena on August 5.
Sciacovelli said yesterday that the annual summer festival is one of the island's quality events and it plays a very important part in the campaign to promote cultural tourism and attract cultural tourists from overseas. She also announced that, to coincide with the presentation of Noches Mediterraneas, a new web site Artescenic listing all of the island's cultural events has been launched by the Ministry for Tourism.
Sciacovelli said that the organisers have already received a great deal of interest in both concerts from overseas and they are confident that Krall will play to a packed house.
The Arena has a maximum capacity for 5'000 people.
Krall started playing the piano at the age of four and restaurants at the age of 15.
Since then, she has been nominated for no less than seven Grammies and has walked away with two.
The first in 1999 for Best Jazz Vocal Performance for the song When I Look In Your Eyes and the second in 2002 for Best Jazz Vocal Album for Live In Paris.
She was also nominated for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals that same year.
She was nominated again last year in the category Best Jazz Vocal Album again for From This Moment On.
She released her first album Stepping Out in 1993 and has since recorded with a number of the best musicians and composers in the world including Elvis Costello who she married at Elton John's estate outside London on December 6, 2003.
Krall's performance in Palma is going to be a real highlight for jazz fans on the island and Ibatur hope to bring at least one top international musical act to the island every year in the future.
