RURAL HERITAGE CENTRE GETS GO AHEAD CENTRAL Government has agreed to work with local authorities on Majorca to set up an environmental protection centre on the Can Fasser country estate in Andratx.

Environment Director, Manuel Rosi, yesterday met with the Mayor of Andratx, Francesc Femenias and Majorca's Socialist representative in the Senate, Xavier Ramis to agree on the project. The two-hectare Can Fasser estate which encompasses natural wetlands and buildings historically typifying the agricultural customs of the people of Majorca, was purchased by Central Government in 2001. But since that time, nothing has been done to preserve and maintain the estate. The Town Council in Andratx has recently collaborated with Central Government's Coastal department on the upkeep of the wetlands which were badly affected by last winter's storms.

CAVES YIELD TWO TONNES OF RUBBISH
SOME 20 volunteers from the Protemar Association got together last Sunday to give the caves at Portals Vells in Calvia, a thoroughly good clean.
The caves cover a large area - some 1'000 square metres and the rubbish which has accumulated inside is totally due to human activity. In just a little over four hours, the volunteers, who were provided with protective gloves, had scooped up more than two tonnes of rubbish and deposited it into black plastic bags. Other waste material, too large for the bags, was taken to the mouth of the caves to be taken away at a later date by the Council's cleaning company.

BUILDING FACELIFT FOR CENTRAL INCA
WHILST work is being carried out in Inca to pedestrianise much of the central streets of the town, the Council is also providing 162'000 euros in subsidies to owners of 22 properties in this area so that they can give the building frontages a facelift.

The urban remodelling project which is being funded by the Balearic Ministry for Public Works includes plans to upgrade properties in its drive to give a new look to suburbs that may have taken on abandoned air over the years.

The ministry's subsidies will complement work being undertaken at a municipal level to brighten buildings in the town and clean up jaded “nooks and crannies”.
