MEMORIAL Day celebrations held yesterday in the Port of Mahon, in Minorca paid tribute to Admiral David G. Farragut, a flag officer of the United States Navy during the American Civil War, and included the unveiling of a plaque recognising the presence of the United States Navy in the port between 1815 and 1840.
The event took place at 12.30pm at the Naval Base in Mahon where the U.S. navy frigate Taylor is docked. Two hours previously, a laurel wreath had been laid at the foot of the monument to Admiral Farragut, an honorary son of Ciutadella, which stands in the Paseo San Nicolas.
