THE Playa de Palma and the tourist areas in Calvia (Palmanova, Magalluf and Paguera), were the ones which had the highest levels of occupation in May, according to the heads of the Majorcan Hotel Federations. The President of the Majorcan Hoteliers association, Pedro Cañellas, said that the tourist figures islandwide were also “slightly better” than for May last year, mainly due to the recovery of German tourism and to the Spanish market where short stays were favourite. The President of the Playa de Palma Hoteliers Association, Francisco Mari, gave the figure of 80 percent occupation in May in this area, with tourists spending more money, the tourists coming to this area being almost exclusively German. The advance sales point to occupation in June being around 90 percent in the 140 hotels on the Playa de Palma.
This contrasts with the 85 percent occupation registered in 2005 which, according to Mari, shows a very positive tendency which he is sure will be maintained during the whole of the high season. For the whole of the island, the recovery in the German tourist market means that the occupation during June could be “much better” than those of recent years.
