DISCO queen Gloria Gaynor heads the all-star line-up for this year's Jazz Voyeur festival, which also includes Roberta Flack, the world famous Herbie Hancock, jazz pianist Brad Mehldau and Joshua Redman. It is the first time that they have performed on the island, and for many of them it will be their first visit to Europe this year.
The concerts will be held in Palma or in the Casino, where the ticket will include entrance to the gaming rooms after the performance. The Casino will also be putting on a disco party after Gaynor's concert which will be free to all ticket holders. Gloria Gaynor is one of the best known female artists of the 1970s, due to the incredible success of her hit record I Will Survive.
She began her career in the world of soul and R & B until she was discovered by Mike Curb of MGM, who signed her up after an audition.
Her ground-breaking Never Can Say Goodbye album was one of the first records intended to be played in clubs (without gaps between the songs). But it was I Will Survive which thrust her into the international limelight, winning a Grammy in 1980. Since then it has appeared in countless film scores and disc compilations and is still amazingly popular. Gaynor never stopped recording and performing live, and in March 2001 released the hit single Just Keep Thinking About You. She also published her autobiography, I Will Survive, and has performed on Broadway and as guest artist on popular TV series such as Ally McBeal. Tickets for the Jazz Voyeur concerts start from 35 euros and can be purchased online via the festival's website www.jazzvoyeurfestival.com.
