Shopkeepers despondent over poor May results

MORE than 90 percent of retailers have reported their disappointment over last month's sales figures, saying they were worse than May in 2009, the Majorcan Small to Medium-sized Businesses Association, Pimeco, reported yesterday.

The association added in its monthly assessment of trade on the island that hardly 9 percent of those shopkeepers interviewed had said that figures for May had been similar to those registered in the same month last year.

Pimeco's report showed that sales had “come to a standstill” in May with 60 percent of members taking part in the survey saying their trade was worsening and less than 10 percent claiming it was getting better.
