Island ports' blue flag record

THE Balearic Islands is the region of Spain holding the highest number of blue flags for water sports marinas - a seal of quality awarded by the European Environmental Education Foundation (FEE), said Public Works Minister Jaume Carbonero yesterday .

Carbonero, who is also President of the Balearic Marinas Federation, was speaking yesterday as he handed out 22 of the much-coveted flags to representatives of marina management from all over the Islands.

Eleven of the flags at marina installations are managed directly by the Public Works ministry and the remainder split up between those controlled by the Balearic Ports Authority and private concessionaries.
