THE first of the total 98 Blue Flags awarded to Balearic beaches and marinas this year was flying yesterday.
The flags are awarded in recognition of high standards of water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management and safety and services and this year, the Balearics is proudly flying one more flag than last year.

The first of the Blue Flags was presented in Porto Cristo to the local council yesterday by the Balearic Minister for Environment, Miguel Angel Grimalt who was accompanied by the Council of Majorca's Head of Environment, Cati Julve.

Broken down, 65 beaches and 20 marinas have won flags this year including Santa Ponsa, for the first time, although Cala Viñas lost its award. The Blue Flag scheme is a voluntary award which now covers beaches all across the world.
