A 49-year-old German motorcyclist, Jorg Peter Bos, was killed yesterday in a head-on collision with a lorry on the s'Aranjassa road.
The victim was reportedly riding a powerful BMW bike along the Ma-19A road when for reasons which are still being investigated, he veered off from the right-hand lane at considerable speed into the oncoming lane in the area of Es Fogueró.
A heavy Iveco lorry was coming in the opposite direction and the driver tried everything he could to avoid a collision, but unsuccessfully.
The motorcyclist took the full force of the head-on crash, ploughing into the front of the lorry's cab.
Although Bos was wearing full protective clothing, including helmet, the injuries he sustained were so severe that he failed to survive the accident.
Emergency services, including the Traffic section of the Guardia Civil could do little more after their arrival than confirm that the motorcyclist had died in the act.
The body was taken to the Institute of Forensic Science where arrangements are being made for an autopsy to be carried out.
