STAFF REPORTER ALTHOUGH construction work will be complete on the new secondary school in the Port of Alcudia in October this year, it will not be until the start of next year when students and teaching staff can move in.

Francisco Fernandez, Managing Director of Balearic Educational Institute “Ibisec” said yesterday that use of temporary portakabins in the grounds of the college in Alcudia will in the interim have to continue housing pupils and staff there until January. Meanwhile, he said that the regional Education ministry is also considering the construction of a new municipal infant and primary school in Alcudia.

Fernandez paid a visit yesterday to the secondary school still under construction accompanied by local authority figures including local Mayor Miquel Ferrer and Parent and Teachers Association representatives. Reportedly, the reason for the project being behind schedule, is that the first time the works went out to tender, costs were not properly adjusted which meant the process had to be repeated. Building deficiencies also emerged as work progressed, creating tension between the ministry and the constructors.
