One person was arrested and 6 more were implicated in 23 forest fires in the Balearics last year.
The Nature Protection unit of the Guardia Civil (Seprona) reported yesterday that last year in the Balearics they had arrested one person and registered the implication of six others in relation to 23 incidents of forest fire. A spokesman for Seprona said that the most common cause of outbreak of fire was negligence (in 12 cases) whilst arson was responsible for three and another three were the result of accidents. There were no cases of fire having started for natural causes. Seprona said that one person had died as a direct result of forest fire last year and that 15 people had to be evacuated from their homes. At a national level, 221 people were arrested or implicated in incidents of forest fire.
