THE Balearics, along with the rest of Spain's coastal municipalities, are going to have to create more healthy beach environments.
While the Environment Commission in Madrid yesterday rejected calls to create no-smoking areas on beaches, it has agreed to devise a plan to improve beaches by creating “areas for healthy living.” Only last week, the Balearic government announced plans to make tens of thousands of special cardboard ashtrays available at the islands' beaches this summer. But the debate over banning smoking on all beaches has been gathering momentum in Madrid and is expected to rumble on. The commission said yesterday that as smoking in the open air is not prohibited in Spain, smoking can not be banned on beaches.
