By Humphrey Carter NOT everybody in Majorca was glued to the Euro 2008 finals on Sunday night. Outside a jewellers in the Port of Andratx, three individuals armed with a heavy mallet lurked, waiting for their moment to strike. According to the images recorded by the security cameras, the three jewellery thieves struck at 9.18 pm just seconds after the Liverpool striker Fernando Torres scored what was to be the winning goal for Spain against Germany.

The jewellers is protected by a security grill that is automatically lowered at 11pm every night. The security glass entry door could not withstand the power and weight of the mallet and the three hooded thieves, all wearing latex gloves, smashed their way into the store.

The heist lasted just over a minute but the police believe they were highly professional and knew exactly what they were looking for and doing. An estimated 40 watches, most of them Rolexes, were stolen along with a few other items of jewellery snatched from the store and around 3'000 euros in cash. The three apparently fled in a getaway car in which a fourth man, the driver, was waiting in the municipal car park. The Local Police arrived at the scene within minutes and found the latex gloves dumped on the pavement and the door of the jewellers smashed in. The Guardia Civil is leading the investigation and was yesterday studying the images captured by the close circuit TV system inside the shop.
