AFTER years of complaints, the authorities have taken the first step to solving the traffic chaos in Es Molinar.
The Council of Majorca, in collaboration with Palma council, has already drafted the project for an access onto the airport motorway from this area. Actually, they have designated Calle Capita Ramonell Boix to build a new ring road (around Llevant industrial estate) as the new link with the motorway. This project will solve the problem of the traffic jams which build up daily on the access road from the motorway into Coll d'en Rebassa and also the traffic congestion in the area of the Avenida Joan Maragall. For anyone who has to go through the area these routes are an everyday form of torture. In the project put together by the Council of Majorca, it is planned to build a roundabout on the Molinar road, where the Llevant ring road will start. This is a new road which will link with the airport motorway. The intersection with the motorway will consist of two roundabouts joined by a bridge over the motorway which will allow traffic to join the motorway in either direction. The Llevant ring road will benefit not only the residents of Es Molinar, but also the traffic coming from the Sineu or Manacor roads, as once the road is constructed it will provide an access road to the coast. Antoni Pascual, the Council of Majorca's head of Public Works has said he is convinced that, if the agreement with the Spanish Ministry of Public Works is signed in July, this project could be a reality in two years time. It will be the responsibility of Palma council to resolve the traffic problems in Avenida Joan Maragall through their project for the remodelling of Palma sea front. Pascual stressed the importance of this project for the residents of Es Molinar. The work will cost 12 million euros which the Spanish Government in Madrid is expected to finance, and a deadline of 14 months.
